Generality of the Sarracenia Plant:

Sarracenia is a herbivorous herbaceous plant of the family Sarraceniaceae, native of South America. It is a perennial plant provided with a rhizomatous root that originates directly from the characteristic bright green leaves with evident red-brick ribs they transform into particular organs with specific functions. The leaves of the Sarracenia, like those of the Nepenthes, arranged in basal rosettes form tubular organs, called ascidians, with the upper end partially covered by an operculum. The inside of the ascidian is rich in nectariferous glands that produce a gelatinous substance that attracts flies or other small insects. Insects, attracted by the color and the scent remain trapped in the water, then pushed down by the closing of the operculum, are digested by the enzymes secreted by the cells of the bottom of the tubular leaf. The inside of the ascidium is subdivided, according to the species, into 3-5 distinct zones having specific functions. In winter, when the plant enters vegetative rest, the leaves dry up and then come out again in the following spring. of the bloom, spring or summer, the sarracenia produces long petioles on which bloom particular yellow, red or brown flowers. The flowers are produced before the opening of new ascidia, in order to prevent the pollinating insects from becoming trapped there.

Cultivation and Care of the Sarracenia Plant:

Sarracenia loves sunny places sheltered from the wind. It should be watered regularly only with rain water or with distilled water, the tap water causes its death in a short time. In winter keep the soil moist, loose and well drained at acidic pH composed of a mixture of sphagnum peat, perlite and sand. It is a plant that absolutely must not be fertilized. The plant must be repotted only when the roots come out of the drainage holes of the water or when the peat that forms the substratum is in the process of rotting.
