Generality of the Dodonea plant:

The Dodonea Plant is an Australian and New Zealand shrub species very common in tropical climates but capable of doing well even along the Italian coasts. The variety with the greatest aesthetic impact, for this reason used excessively, is Dodonaea viscosa purpurea, which colors its foliage bright red in the cold of winter. It is a species belonging to the Sapindaceae family. It looks like a very branched shrub from the base although it tends to defoliate a little with age. It has narrow and oblong leaves, with a wavy margin, persistent, leathery, bright and slightly sticky in the juvenile phase, hence the specific name of "viscose"; the color in the rubra variety is bronze green in summer with reddish hues to become purplish red in winter. The flowers are unisexual, carried on different individuals being the dioecious species, and gathered in very inconspicuous terminal clusters. From the female ones, clusters of small winged capsules of a beautiful pink color develop in summer.

Dodonea Plant Care and Cultivation:

For the cultivation of Dodonea it is advisable to use a well-drained soil, even saline but not acidic. Choose an exposure in full sun or even partial shade. Tolerates exposure to strong sea winds. The ideal habitat is the coastal areas of our peninsula. In other areas with cold winters It is mandatory to keep it in a warm greenhouse, in fact it does not tolerate temperatures below 3-5 ° C, it resists well to high summer temperatures. Often the dodonea viscose is used thanks to its thick vegetation, as a hedge plant, but it is also used in association with other essences; it is also grown in pots for use on terraces or balconies.
