Avocado tree
Generality of the Avocado tree:
Avocado is an exotic fruit that is recently starting to be grown in Italy too, especially in the regions of the far south such as Calabria and Sicily. Its scientific name is Persea americana and it is popularly known as avocado or avocado tree. This plant belongs to the Lauraceae family and has been cultivated for over 7,000 years. The species grows well with a tropical climate but adapts well to the mild climate areas of the Mediterranean.
The avocado plant can reach a height of about 20 meters but more commonly, when cultivated, it does not go beyond 12 meters.

Generality of the Avocado tree:
Avocado is considered one of the healthiest and most energetic fruits that nature can offer us. It is above all a source of mineral salts, such as potassium, omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins. Avocado is a precious source of minerals and lipids considered beneficial for our body. 100 grams of avocado (considering only the edible part, i.e. the pulp) provide our body, based on the CREA tables, 4.4 grams of protein, 23 grams of lipids and 1.8 grams of carbohydrates. of vegetable origin, avocado does not contain cholesterol. Avocado is also a source of vitamins, with particular reference to vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E. It is a set of vitamins that help our body protect itself from aging, strengthen vision and defenses Avocado is one of the most energetic fruits we have available. In fact, 100 grams of avocado (edible part) provide our body with 231 calories, which derive mainly from the lipid content of this fruit.
Cultivation and Care of the Avocado tree:
Avocados need a lot of light to thrive and a lot of space too. Cultivation in the home is an end in itself, that is, it must be done with the awareness that after 5 - 6 years it must be given to a friend with more space available. Anyone who wants to grow avocado and then transplant it into the garden and harvest the fruit will have to do a large number of pruning in the very first years of the plant's development. The avocado tree reaches an average height of about 10 meters although many specimens, in the right conditions, reach 15-20 meters. The foliage is wide and leafy, the trunk is covered with a greyish rind while the leaves are long, oval, and vary from 12 to over 25-30 cm. Keep the avocado plant in a sunny area away from sudden changes in temperatures and wind. In this first phase of growth, it is better to keep the avocado in a partially sheltered area without ever exposing it to a temperature below 4 ° C. The ideal type of soil for avocado cultivation is loose and fresh. It is also important that it has excellent water drainage, good fertility and neutral pH. It is not a plant that adapts to difficult soils, such as clayey and compact soil can be. The water drainage avoids the onset of fungal diseases and root rot. The avocado needs continuous water assistance during the hot months. In summer, the plant has a great vegetative growth, but it needs the soil to be always well moist. In the other seasons of the year there is less need for irrigation (this, of course, will depend on the volume of rainfall).
