The lavender plant is an evergreen perennial herb, native to the Mediterranean basin. It has silvery leaves, very fragrant, narrow and elongated; in summer it produces many flowers, small and fragrant, grouped in spikes. Generality of the Lavender Plant:
Lavender is a perennial plant that can reach one meter in height, with erect, ramified and woody stems at the base; the leaves are linear or lanceolate, greyish, with turned margins; at the apex of the stems a sort of spike of lilac-colored flowers, elongated and thin, with an intense and pleasant fragrance. Flowering generally takes place during the spring-summer period. Lavender has been used for millennia as an officinal plant, in herbal medicine, in cosmetics, in traditional medicine, to prepare herbal teas, decoctions, ointments. It has tonic properties for the nervous system, stimulating for the circulatory system, antiseptic, carminative, antispasmodic and antibacterial. Lavender also has antiseptic and analgesic power, as well as a mild bactericide. Lavender flowers retain their scent for years, when dried in the sun, typical is the use of small bunches of lavender to perfume the linen in the closets, also removing the insects. Lavender finds little use in cooking, dried flowers are added to ice cream, jams and vinegar; thanks to the pollination of the flowers, made by bees or other pollinating insects, lavender honey is obtained.
Cultivation and Care of the Lavender Plant:
Lavender is an easy-to-grow shrub, positioned in a sunny place, with a very well drained soil, even stony; can withstand temperatures of some degrees below zero, up to about -12 ° C, so in winter it can be safely left outdoors.
It is an evergreen, the flowering takes place in late spring and summer; loves sunny and well-ventilated exposures. Some species endure intense heat, others fear cold. It adapts to all types of soil while preferring calcareous, alkaline and well-drained ones; it is a plant that should be watered only when the soil is completely dry. In the spring you have to administer a liquid fertilizer, specific for green plants, diluted in the irrigating water.
