Generality of the Thyme Plant:
The Thyme is an aromatic herb with many properties and excellent in the kitchen to make different types of dishes tastier. It is a shrub with a small size and green-gray leaves and rather small, with an intense and immediately perceptible scent, especially by rubbing them between the fingers. The flowers of the thyme occurs between spring and summer, with the appearance of pinkish flowers. The use of thymus is particularly indicated for the treatment of diseases affecting the respiratory tract. There are hundreds of varieties of thyme, some of which are characterized by a pleasant lemon aroma. The thymus can boast an unexpected vitamin content, both in reference to vitamin C and to the vitamins of group B. It also contains thymol, linaiol and mineral salts. It is a medicinal and aromatic plant, which has inside an essential oil and beneficial substances thanks to which thyme is attributed balsamic, anticatarrali and antiseptic properties. Among the mineral salts contained in the thymus we find manganese, iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium. It is also considered by alternative medicine as a real natural antibiotic and a diuretic. The thyme lends itself very well in the kitchen to flavoring different dishes: it can be used in the preparation of soups, soups, and velouté. It goes well with dishes based on fish or meat or vegetables such as carrots, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, onions, aubergines and mushrooms.
Cultivation and Care of the Thyme Plant:
The thyme is native to the temperate zones of Europe, it thrives well with the Mediterranean climate so it is grown easily in our country, especially in warm areas with little rainfall. To cultivate the thyme, it is sufficient to prepare a light, draining and calcareous soil; the thyme grows well in a sunny position. It grows well in arid and sunny places, between rocks and gravels so its cultivation is possible even for those who have a rock garden. It does not fear the cold, frost or the heat so it does not need special care.
