Generalities :

The Sorrento Walnut Tree is the most traditional in Italy, widespread especially in the Campania region, it has good productivity and consistency. Ripening and harvesting are intermediate and fall in the third decade of September. The fruit is oval in shape, slightly pointed and with an average weight of 12 grams. The shell is light brown, slightly wrinkled while the kernel is light ocher, very tender and crunchy and slightly oily. This variety is recommended for walnut cultivation in the central-southern areas and in sunny environments but not where there is a risk of late freezing as flowering and medium-early and spring cold could compromise the harvest.

Generality:

The Walnut of Sorrento is the most famous, originally from the Sorrento peninsula, which over time has given rise to a wide range of biotypes, all commercially known as the Walnut of Sorrento. The two most common ecotypes are: one elongated, regular, slightly pointed at the apex and blunt at the base, the other rounded, smaller. The valves, in both cases, are smooth, of reduced thickness, the fruit is made up of a kernel of very pleasant, slightly oily cream-colored flavor. One of the main characteristics is that, unlike other cultivars, the kernel can easily be extracted intact, which makes it particularly appreciated by the confectionery industry and consumers. The harvest is concentrated in the months of September and October with an extremely variable yield, also in consideration of the conditions in which the crop is found.Nuts are very energetic fruits, for 100 gr of product they provide the body with about 600 calories. all oil seeds are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and mineral salts, such as zinc, calcium, potassium, copper and iron. In particular, they are rich in magnesium and are therefore among the natural food supplements of this mineral. In walnuts, the intake of vitamin E and that of folic acid is also consistent.

Cultivation and Care:

For the cultivation of the Walnut, it must be placed in shallow holes, in fact 12-15 cm of earth will be enough above the roots. When choosing the place for the planting of the walnut, keep in mind that this plant can grow up to 25-30 meters in height with an expanded and globular bearing. From the first year of cultivation it will be necessary to carry out two green pruning operations: the first will take place when the shoots have reached 20-25 cm (you will have to choose the one intended to constitute the extension of the stem, eliminating the suckers and shortening all the others up to 1-2 leaves on the central aces), the second intervention must be carried out in summer, in July or in any case during the second vegetative re-growth. The second pruning operation of the walnut is also carried out to favor the central shoot. The pruning operations of the walnut described above must also be repeated in the second year, until the tree has reached the height where to form the scaffold, about 2.5 meters from the ground. From the third year of cultivation the pruning operations will have to be more contained, in fact you will have to limit yourself to removing the nerds, the dry branches and the badly inserted branches.
