The holm oak, also called elce, is a spontaneous tree belonging to the Fagaceae family and to the Quercus genus, widespread in the countries of the Mediterranean basin. The holm oak is an evergreen and broad-leaved tree, with a rarely straight trunk, single or divided at the base, up to 20-24 m tall. It can take on the appearance of a bush if it grows in rocky environments. It is very long-lived, being able to become centuries-old, but has a very slow growth.

Generalities Quercus ilex tree:
The Holm oak is the only evergreen oak, it is Quercus ilex and belongs to the Fagaceae family. The holm oak is an oak able to live in arid environments, it grows slowly and is very long-lived (it can live for hundreds of years). The holm oak (Quercus ilex) has a gray-brownish trunk that tends to crack with time. The leaves are persistent, with the upper part of a dark green and shiny while the lower lamina is rich in hair and is grayish in color. The holm oak has male and female flowers separated from each other: the male ones are gathered in cylindrical catkins, the female ones are single or double that sprout from a small peduncle. The fruit of the holm oak consists of the famous acorn which is botanically considered an achene.
Quercus ilex tree cultivation and care:
The holm oak tree grows preferably in alkaline soils that are not too clayey and well exposed to the sun, naturally in warm or mild climates as the Mediterranean scrub tree does not like harsh environments: it is advisable not to plant it too close to homes because being an evergreen it does not lose its leaves, which in winter can prevent the passage of sunlight due to their density.
