Generalities of the Myrsine plant:

The Myrsine africana is a dioecious shrub (each individual bears either only male or female flowers), evergreen, very ramified and compact, up to about 1.5 m tall, with thin ascending branches, greyish, tomentose in the apical part, marked by scars of fallen leaves. The name of the genus comes from the Greek term “myrsine” with which the common myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) was indicated; the Latin name of the species “africana” = African, refers to one of the places of origin.

Generalities of the Myrsine plant:

The species is native to Africa (Angola, Azores, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Somalia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe), Asia (Afghanistan, China, India, Pakistan and Yemen), where it grows both in the forests and on open, arid and sunny slopes. The leaves are simple, alternate, almost sessile (without petiole), from obovate to lanceolate, 0.6-1.5 cm long and 0.4-1 cm broad, leathery, with margins often slightly toothed in the upper half, glossy dark green above, light green below, sometimes punctuated by glands, aromatic; the new leaves are deep red. The inflorescences are axillary, often on the part of the branches devoid of leaves, with yellowish-white flowers with 4 lobes of 2 mm of diameter, the male flowers with red stamens longer than the petals. The fruits, naturally present only on female plants, are globose drupes, persistent for some months, of a red or blackish purple color of about 6 mm of diameter containing only one seed. Green leaves and dried fruits are used in traditional medicine for various pathologies, in particular the fruits for their anti-helminthic (vermifuge) and laxative properties. In the places of origin the leaves are used as fodder for livestock.

Myrsine Plant Cultivation and Care:

Very ornamental species, both for the foliage and for the fruits, in the female plants, with rather slow growth, cultivable in full sun or partial shade in the tropical, subtropical and warm temperate climate zones, where it can resist temperatures down to -6 ° C for a short time. Easy to cultivate, it is not particularly demanding regarding the type of soil, provided it is well drained, and once well rooted it can withstand dry periods, therefore also suitable for rock gardens and Mediterranean type, as an isolated specimen, in groups or for borders , even low
