La pianta di Citronella si coltiva in terra da giardino ben drenata e sabbiosa. Posizionare questa pianta in luogo semiombreggiato, dove possa ricevere alcune ore di luce solare diretta. Il terreno si mantiene asciutto, inumidendolo leggermente una volta al mese, o anche meno. In genere se il clima è rigido non è necessaio annaffiare durante i mesi invernali.
