Generality of the Peppermint Plant:
Peppermint is an evergreen with ovate leaves, with toothed margins covered with hair. They are used in the medical field or in gastronomy. It's very used in the kitchen to flavor salads or vegetables. The mint plant grows in the ground, in a sunny place, with a fresh and rich soil, at the time of planting, we work well the soil, enriching it with little manure, and lightening it with sand, to improve drainage. Generality of the Peppermint Plant:
Peppermint is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is a plant that can grow up to 70 cm in height. It has an erect or ascending stem with a quadrangular section, slightly hairy and reddish in color. This has a stoloniferous pattern, that is, it emits different lateral ramifications, which emerge from axillary buds placed near the collar of the plant. In this way the plant stretches along the ground, succeeds in emitting new roots, very developed, and leaves, from which new seedlings are generated. Because of this characteristic, peppermint appears to be a very proliferating plant. Due to the active ingredients contained in the mint, it is attributed to healing and disinfecting properties. It is useful in case of gastro-intestinal disorders, helps the functioning of the liver and promotes digestion. Contains menthol, vitamin C, antibiotic substances, limonene and isovalerianate. Mint can be used in cooking both fresh and dried as an aromatic herb to be used to flavor dishes. It is excellent as a condiment for salads, vegetables, legumes and cereals.
Cultivation and Care of the Peppermint Plant:
Peppermint is very suitable for our climate, even if it does not like frost. Regarding the exposure, it is better to avoid full sun in the warmer areas.. It is an aromatic that is good in half-shade positions. It can therefore be ideal to exploit the spaces close to the walls that are generally not optimal for most crops. We recommend using a fairly draining but well-fertile soil, rich in humus and organic matter. In hot weather we recommend frequent watering in cool times (early morning or evening).
