Generalities:

The Bella di Spagna olive is a widespread variety in Puglia and sporadically grown in central Italy. Vigorous plant, very dense foliage. Narrow leaves. Fruit of exceptional size (10-12 g), ellipsoidal shape intended for the canteen. Definitely rustic variety, it resists well to the main climatic adversities; it also has high tolerance to mange and peacock (or cycloconio) eye. Self-sterile, good pollinators are Pendolino and Maurino. Good productivity but susceptible to alternation. The yield at the mill is fair (16-18%). The pulp is consistent. The Bella di Spagna olive tree begins its flowering towards the end of May-June and the fruits are harvested between October and January, their average yield is 8kg / 10sqm.

Cultivation and Care:

The Bella di Spagna Olive Tree, more than the minimum winter temperatures, however, fears the sudden changes in temperature that can cause splits in the trunks and branches. Some parts of the plant are particularly sensitive to the action of frost: the leaves, the buds and the bark. The latter is torn not only in the twigs, but also in the larger branches and in the trunk. The olive tree is a plant that prefers arid environments while it fears excessive humidity, except in spring, in correspondence with the maximum vegetative activity. Calcareous and dry soils are ideal, but good productions can also be had well in clayey soils, if well drained, and in sandy soils, as long as they are sufficiently irrigated.
