Generality of the 'Leucocarpa' Olive tree:
The Leucocarpa variety is widespread in central-southern Italy, particularly in Puglia. Medium vigorous tree with upright growth habit. The foliage is large and expanded. The leaves are medium-large, elongated, dark green in color. The fruit is small, ivory white when ripe with medium oil content. Productivity is good and constant. Self-sterile variety, good pollinators are Pendolino, Maurino. The peculiarity of this plant is that when the drupes are completely ripe their color is ivory due to the lack of anthocyanin synthesis. As a consequence this plant takes on an absolutely unique aspect, completely covered with these ivory-colored fruits that give a sense of purity and exceptionality. The oil that is obtained is very clear and traditionally was mixed with balm and extracts of particular roots to obtain the Chrism oil, used for sacred ceremonies and to feed the lamps in places of worship as burning produces little smoke ; this is why, in Calabria, especially in the areas of Byzantine origin, leucocarpa or leucolea olive trees, as it is used to call it locally, were planted near the Basilian monasteries.
Cultivation and Care of Olive tree Leucocarpa:
The 'Leucocarpa' Olive tree, more than the minimum winter temperatures, however, fears the sudden changes in temperature that can cause splits in the trunks and branches. Some parts of the plant are particularly sensitive to the action of frost: the leaves, the buds and the bark. The latter is torn not only in the twigs, but also in the larger branches and in the trunk. The olive tree is a plant that prefers arid environments while it fears excessive humidity, except in spring, in correspondence with the maximum vegetative activity. Calcareous and dry soils are ideal, but good productions can also be had well in clayey soils, if well drained, and in sandy soils, as long as they are sufficiently irrigated.
