Generality of the Osmanthus plant:
Osmanthus is a plant native to Asia. Osmanthus is a shrub native to East Asia: it is known, appreciated and used here for its aromatic and medicinal virtues. The name osmanthus derives from the Greek and emphasizes its peculiar characteristic of having deliciously scented flowers and leaves. It has been known in Italy for a long time and has become a commonly used shrub, especially in areas with a temperate climate, therefore in the Center-South, on the coasts and near large lakes. It is preferable to place the plants in full sun or partially shaded, sheltered from cold winds. In regions with cold winters it is necessary to withdraw it indoors. Generalities of the Osmanthus plants :
La Pianta Osmanthus comprende circa 50 specie di arbusti o alberi appartenenti alla famiglia delle Oleaceae, la stessa dell’ulivo. Dal punto di vista orticolo le caratteristiche peculiari sono il fogliame persistente, la fioritura primaverile e autunnale e il potente aroma che rilascia nell’aria. Le dimensioni definitive si possono attestare dai 40 cm fino a 4 metri. È quindi una pianta che si adatta a molti usi e collocazioni diverse. In generale è piuttosto resistente e adattabile in quanto a terreno e necessità idriche. Alcune specie sono invece abbastanza delicate per quanto riguarda l’esposizione alle basse temperature. Questo arbusto si riconosce facilmente grazie alle sue foglie persistenti, coriacee e molto lucide. Alcune hanno il bordo liscio, altre invece presentano delle dentellature e delle spine che le rendono molto simili a quelle dell’agrifoglio. I fiori, raccolti in mazzi o pannocchie ascellari o apicali, sono per lo più bianchi o aranciati. La produzione primaverile avviene sui rami dell’anno precedente, quella autunnale sui rami cresciuti nell’annata. La maturazione dei frutti, anch’essi decorativi, avviene verso ottobre. Hanno l’aspetto di bacche dal violaceo al marrone, simili a piccole prugne o olivette, dotate di nocciolo interno.
Osmanthus Plant Cultivation and Care :
The osmanthus prefers acid soils and a little sandy, never impregnated with water, cause of humidity and rot. They love the sun and direct exposure to the rays; placing it in shady areas could affect the flowering of the shrub. The plant does not like continuous watering and the quantity of water must be carefully regulated, such as the humidity of the soil. A light pruning is recommended, to prevent the plant from taking a wild shape, and to encourage more branching. Be careful with this plant, because the foliage is equipped with thorns. Flowering occurs in spring with small white flowers and sometimes is repeated in autumn, when you will start to see the first small orange flowers that do not stand out for their beauty, but on the other hand will leave a unique scent
